Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL Launched with Advanced Face Unlock

Google has officially announced its new flagship smartphones, the Google Pixel 4 and the Pixel 4 XL. The phones were unveiled after months of rumors and numerous speculations. It’s pretty safe to say the Google Pixel 4 is one of the most leaked-about phones of 2019.

Previous models always debut a new feature and always comes with the latest version of the Android operating system. Google Pixel 4 and its larger sibling come+ with dual-rear cameras, radar-powered face unlock and new unique features such as a car crash detection feature.

At the press event in New York on Tuesday, October 15, Google unveiled a slew of new products. In addition to the Pixel duo, they also launched the Pixel Buds 2 wireless earbuds, Pixelbook Go Chromebook, the Google Nest Mini smart speaker, and the Nest WiFi smart router.

Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL Availability

Google is already accepting pre-orders for Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL. The Pixel 4 will start at $799 for a 64GB version and $899 for the larger Pixel 4 XL.

Both the small and larger versions will come in the colors of black, white or orange, which google refers to as “Oh So Orange.” US customers will have the ability to upgrade either of the phones to 128GB for only $100 more.

Specifications

Google Pixel 4 does feature a new design when compared to previous models. Both variants have a square bump on the back that host the dual camera lens, and an aluminum band on the sides.

The small variant comes equipped with a 5.7-inch OLED FHD display with a 444-pixel density while the larger variant comes with a 6.3-inch OLED QHD display with 537-pixel density. Both displays come sans knotch and have the ability to maintain a constant refresh rate of 90Hz.

Built for everyday use, the Pixel 4 and its XL sibling are protected by Gorilla Glass 5 on both front and back. They are also rated IP68 for dust and water resistance.

There are features that accompany both displays as well. There’s a feature called Ambient EQ that adapts the device’s screen color temperature to make the colors look more natural in different lighting conditions.

To get the ordinary specifications out the way, it’s powered by a Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB of RAM and comes in the storage options of 64GB or 128GB. Both variants will run on Android 10 with all the bells and whistles of the new operating system. Don’t expect a fingerprint scanner nor any headphone jacks on any of the phones.

Motion Sense Radar Face unlock

Perhaps one of the most advanced features is the Pixel’s new radar face unlock function. According to Google, the face unlock on the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL is secure enough to be used for payments with Google Pay.

Both phones use a mix of sensors, infrared and a tiny radar to verify and unlock with a quick scan of the face. Motion Sense can be used in other instances as well. It will detect hand gestures to skip to the next track, reject and answer calls.

Well with advanced face unlock function such as the Motion Sense, there’s no need for a fingerprint scanner.

Google Pixel 4 Dual-Rear Camera

While other flagships aimed for a triple camera setup, Google decided to stick with a dual-camera setup. Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL are the first Pixel phones not have a single rear camera.

The dual-camera setup includes a main 12-megapixel lens with the same f/1.7 wide-angle lens found on the Pixel 3. The secondary is a telephoto lens with a 16-megapixel sensor and 2x optical zoom.

When compared to the Apple iPhone 11 Pro and Samsung Note 10+ with three lenses, Google Pixel 4 is lacking a second wide-angle. This could simply mean that Google has prioritized zooming over wide-angle shots.

Google Pixel 4 camera setup also brings advanced camera functions as well. It features Night Sight, a feature that allows the user to capture brighter images in low light conditions. Google claims you can now even take photos of stars.

On the front is a single 8-megapixel camera with a wider field of view. A uber cool feature is its live real-time audio transcription that adds captions to your videos as you record.

The Pixel 4 Safety App

Of all the features mentioned, the Safety app intrigues us. One of the features of the Pixel 4 safety app is the ability to detect car crashes.

The safety app will automatically detect crashes and call 911. It will only dial the emergency number if it is a serious crash, fender benders should trigger the function.
